What is Botox?

Botox is an injectable treatment to reduce the appearance of facial fine lines and minor wrinkles to make a person look younger. This Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved treatment is widely popular because of its inherent cosmetic benefits without the downsides of a surgery. The primary use of Botox is to reduce muscular function between the eyebrows to achieve a relaxed and rested look, and reduction of fine lines and wrinkles. The treatment is also effective for conditions such as crow’s feet around the eyes, eyebrow position, neck cords and even sweat reduction under the arms. It is important to receive Botox treatment from a qualified and experienced Botox expert. The treatment must be tailored to suit the unique needs of a patient in order to achieve the best outcome. Results with Botox may last for about three months or up to six months in some cases. The treatment is quick and can be performed usually in 15 to 30 minutes. It involves almost no downtime, and results start becoming visible within a day or two. Depending on a patient’s condition, the doctor may recommend Botox treatment to be combined with other procedures such as dermal fillers.

Procedure

Botox treatment may appear simple on the surface, but it requires specialized skills and training to achieve safe and successful results with Botox. The human face consists of 43 muscles, which makes it crucial for the operating Botox expert to be able to understand and target the right points in order to achieve optimal outcomes. The chemical botulinum toxin is injected directly into the targeted muscles using very thin needles. The chemical substance injected in the right quantity relaxes the wrinkle-producing muscle, which allows the return of the natural facial expression and disappearance of the wrinkle. The number of injections required may depend on the facial features and the extent of fine lines and wrinkles to be removed. For instance, a furrowed brow may require about five injections, while crow’s feet could be corrected with two or three injections. The treatment does not require anesthesia because the Botox chemical contains anesthetic to prevent pain. Full results usually become noticeable within a week. The patient can enjoy a more youthful facial appearance for at least three to four months. Botox treatment is not suitable for deep creases and folds on the face, and it is not a filler treatment to replenish skin volume or firm up sagging facial skin.

Recovery

Botox patients can go back to their regular activities immediately after the procedure. The operating doctor will instruct the patient to avoid rubbing or massaging the affected areas for a while after the treatment. This will avoid the risk of the chemical being pushed away to another area of the face. If this occurs, the patient may suffer from temporary facial sagginess or weakness.

Risks

Botox is one of the safest and minimally invasive cosmetic anti-aging treatments. The procedure should ideally be performed at a licensed med spa under the care and supervision of a qualified and experienced physician. Side effects of Botox treatment may include the following:
  •       Pain, redness, swelling and bruising at the injection site
  •       Nausea
  •       Headache
  •       Flu-like symptoms
  •       Temporary facial drooping

Effectiveness

Botox treatment is not designed to treat all kinds of facial wrinkles, creases, and folds. People who need a reduction of wrinkles below the eye, or repair of sun damaged skin may have to opt for other procedures. The effectiveness of Botox treatment may vary from one patient to another depending on skin type, skin thickness, extent of wrinkles, and facial features.

What is Dermal Filler?

Dermal fillers are a non-surgical solution to reduce the signs of aging from the face. Without resorting to any highly invasive techniques, dermal fillers can restore a youthful facial appearance, augment the lips, define contours and reduce facial wrinkles and creases. The treatment is usually recommended for people are keen to reduce their signs of aging without undergoing surgery. The filler substance is injected directly into the targeted area of the face for almost immediate results. The downtime involved is negligible or nil, and the risk of side effects that are generally associated with a surgery is eliminated. However, the results with dermal fillers are not permanent. The patient can repeat the treatment as per the guidance of the skin specialist in order to prolong and maintain results.

How does it work?

Dermal filler stimulates the natural skin collagen that may be depleted in the body due to aging, sun exposure, and other factors. The body contains hyaluronic acid, which is found in high concentrations in soft connective tissue and cartilage, and in the fluid around the eyes. With the loss of this natural substance, the skin begins to lose its firmness and elasticity, resulting in sagging skin and facial lines and wrinkles. A filler can replace this substance and stimulate collagen to rejuvenate the affected area. Hyaluronic acid used in fillers is not derived from animal sources. The advantage with fillers that use this substance is that no prior allergy tests may be required. Juvederm, Restylane, and Perlane are some of the popular dermal fillers that are based on hyaluronic acid. Radiesse is another useful dermal filler that is based on calcium hydroxylapatite. It is a heavy facial filler to reduce very conspicuous signs of aging. Deep creases such as nasolabial folds, frown lines and marionette lines can be filled with this natural substance. Radiesse can also be used to enhance facial contours and fullness of cheeks. Juvederm Juvederm is one of the most popular, FDA-approved dermal filers that is delivered directly into the targeted areas of the face. It is available in the form of an injectable gel to treat skin folds and wrinkles, including the lines running on the sides of the mouth and nose. The advantage with Juvederm is that a single treatment can last up to a whole year. Customized treatment can be provided for a patient to produce a natural looking outcome. Juvederm application involves the use of a fine needle through which the filler is eased underneath the skin to fill the soft tissue in the dermis. The filler gel adds volume instantly to the targeted area, causing the appearance of wrinkles to reduce. The filler is based on non-animal hyaluronic acid, which makes it safer even for people who are sensitive to animal-based substances. Restylane and Perlane Restylane and Perlane are two of the oldest and highly reliable dermal fillers available today. The fillers should be administered by an experienced and qualified skin specialist only. People who have noticeable facial wrinkles or are bothered by a loss of volume on their facial features may opt for Restylane or Perlane treatment. The procedure is brief, painless, and involves little to no downtime. Results can be visible almost immediately. The treatment is ideal for people having moderate to severe creases, folds or wrinkles, and those who have lost facial volume and fullness. Radiesse Radiesse is an advanced dermal filler to treat wrinkles and facial lines. Some clinical studies have shown that the effects of Radiesse treatment may last longer than other similar fillers. A single treatment may continue to provide benefits for up to a year or even longer. The treatment is effective for nasolabial folds, laugh lines, and other wrinkles around the mouth. Cheek bones can appear more defined when it is used in the cheek area.

Non-surgical Treatment for Varicose & Spider Veins in Encino, CARejuvenate Medical Spa specializes in non-invasive and minimally invasive treatments for your skin. Led by Dr. Bijan Farah, Medical Director & specialist with nearly four decades of practicing medicine, Rejuvenate Medical Spa is the preferred center for skin and laser treatments in Encino, Sherman Oaks, and other surrounding areas.

The facility provides highly effective non-surgical solutions for the common problem of varicose and spider veins. These veins can compromise the aesthetic appearance of the patient, and if left untreated for a long time, may also cause medical complications. Dr. Farah advises patients to opt for sclerotherapy or laser treatments, which are a proven and effective medical procedure to remove varicose and spider veins without having to under the knife.

What is Vein laser treatment?

Simple laser vein treatment can treat spider veins and tiny varicose veins just under the skin's surface. Usually, more than one laser session is needed. They are scheduled every 6 to 12 weeks, as prescribed by your doctor. (If you have poor blood circulation feeding these tiny veins, the larger "feeder" vein must first be treated with surgery, endovenous laser or radiofrequency treatment, or sclerotherapy.)

What is Sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is one of the oldest and most effective techniques to eliminate varicose and spider veins. The procedure has been in use for nearly a hundred years, but the techniques have become more advanced over time. Rejuvenate Medical Spa employs the most advanced techniques to ensure the best results with minimal pain and discomfort.

In sclerotherapy, an injection of sclerosant solution will be injected directly into the targeted vein. The solution is designed to react against the lining of blood vessels in the diseased vein, and cause it to swell and the blood to clot. This condition will stop the blood flow in the targeted vein, which will result in the blood vessels turning into dead scar tissue. Over a period of time, the scar tissue will disappear and the skin will be free of the unsightly varicose veins and spider veins.

Suitable Candidates

Patients may seek an initial consultation with Dr. Farah to determine if they are a suitable candidate for sclerotherapy. Pregnant women may not be eligible for the procedure, but those taking birth control pills may still go for it.  A patient who has experienced a blood clot in the past may or may not be eligible, depending on the cause of the clot, and based on an evaluation of the area that needs to be treated.

Procedure

Rejuvenate Medical Spa is fully equipped with state of the art facilities to perform laser vein treatments or sclerotherapy on an outpatient basis. The doctor will map the affected area and target specific veins that need to be removed.

The entire procedure may be completed within 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the extent of treatment involved. The treatment may require multiple sessions, considering the number, size and location of the diseased veins and the general health status of the patient.

Complications

Side effects and complications are minimal in case of sclerotherapy because it is a mild non-surgical procedure. The patient may experience minor discomfort such as itching in the affected area for a day or two following the treatment. Redness may be observed at the injection site, which will fade away on its own. Mild bruising may occur, especially in larger veins, which may last up to a few weeks. Multiple sessions of sclerotherapy may be necessary in most cases to achieve a complete elimination of varicose and spider veins.

Effectiveness

A single session of sclerotherapy may result in elimination of at least 50 to 75 percent of the treated veins. In rare situations, a patient may not respond to the sclerotherapy injections at all. The doctor may consider alternative solutions in such cases. Complete effects of the procedure will be visible for spider veins in about four to six weeks. In case of varicose veins, the elimination will occur over a period of three to four months. Repeat treatments may be necessary in cases where the veins reappear.
